Warrender New Squad Training Structure

National Squad
This is the club's premier squad for extremely dedicated swimmers committed to achieving success at National and International level. The normal weekly programme consists of 9-10 pool and 2-3 land work sessions providing a possible total of up to 23 hours of training time each week. Warrender Chief Coach Ian Wright is in charge of the group and is assisted at times by Neville Cross.

Senior Squad
A special programme of training for senior level swimmers who want to continue working towards competitive success but are unable to maintain the level of commitment required in National Squad due to work or university commitments. Swimmers in this group can attend up to a maximum of six swimming workouts from the National squad programme. These sessions will be agreed on an individual basis in advance with the Chief Coach Ian Wright.

Junior National Squad
Formerly known as 'Gold' Squad, this group caters for the rapidly improving, talented and seriously committed age group swimmers who are already experiencing success at the District and/or National level but who are not yet ready (in terms of training capacity, physical maturity or psychological maturity) for the advanced training of National Squad. Seven weekly pool (plus one land) sessions are available each week (12-13 hours in total) and the squad is headed up by Coach Russ Payne.

Age Group Squad
This is a new group which replaces the current Silver and Bronze Squad programmes. It will commence in January with five dedicated pool sessions although it is our intention to increase this to six later. All members of the squad are required to attend the one early morning session each week. Australian Coach Laurel Bailey will be responsible for the group when she returns to Edinburgh in February. Until that time, Coaches Gail Smith and Dawn Smith will lead the programme and subsequently, regularly assist with the programme from February onwards.

D+ Squad
A squad designed to fast track young talented development level swimmers who also show a serious commitment to becoming a successful competitive swimmer in the future. The squad is run by Coach Hammy Smith with four weekly workouts plus an additional early morning session that all members are expected to attend.

D 2 / 3 Squad
This squad consists of the majority of the current D2 swimmers plus some of the D3 squad (hence the name is a combination of both). Three 1 to 1.25 hour sessions are provided each week with swimmers encouraged to attend all three in order to make maximum gains. An additional early morning workout is also available each week and swimmers must show commitment to this morning workout before they will be allowed to progress to either D+ or the Age Group Squad. Coaches Hammy & Frances Smith will lead the programme with assistance from a number of other volunteer coaching helpers.

D1 Squad
The normal main entry point to the club for most swimmers. Three 1 to 1.25 hour sessions are provided each week with swimmers encouraged to attend all three in order to make maximum gains. Coaches Hammy & Frances Smith will lead the programme with assistance from a number of other volunteer coaching helpers.

Club Squad
A twice weekly one hour session for swimmers wishing to retain their fitness levels and enjoy the social benefits of swimming without the pressure of competition. Coach Jenni Holt is the lead coach for the group and welcomes newcomers at any time (up to a maximum of 15).

Prelim Squad
A brand new specialist programme to help introduce advanced lesson swimmers to club swimming. To be run as a 20 session course over 10 weeks for a fixed fee. At the end of the course, swimmers should be aiming to progress to one of the above development squads if they have shown adequate commitment and achieved the required standard during the course. Coach Gail Smith is in charge of this twice weekly programme.

Masters

As with many swimming clubs, Warrender also operates a masters section for any keen swimmers from 19 years upwards. There are over 30 regular attendees ranging from those just wishing to keep fit, right up to serious swimmers who compete at the highest masters levels. There are a few spaces available in the squad and the club is keen to welcome new members. The squad presently has three workouts available each week.

WaterPolo

The club has a long history of success in water polo throughout Scotland and Great Britain. The current team continues to be a strong force in the East District Championship and Scottish Cup. Although mainly seniors, there is now a fast growing junior section
