Warrender Swimming

Squads

Warrender currently operates eight main training squads for it's competitive swimmers.  In addition to this we have a 'club squad' for recreational swimmers, a masters group for the enthusiastic adult swimmer, and a very well established water polo section.

NATIONAL SQUAD
The club's top squad is for serious, dedicated, and high achieving competitive swimmers only.  Swimmers in this squad include Great Britain senior internationals, Commonwealth Games representatives, and Scottish National Squad members.  Training takes place every day, year round and is geared to delivering success at Scottish National, British National, and International level.  The squad is coached by our Head Coach Ian Wright and entry to the group is by invitation only to swimmers who have the right attitude and commitment to become elite international swimmers.

JUNIOR NATIONAL SQUAD
Our Junior National Squad programme is run by our Director of Age Group Swimming, Laurel Bailey.  Swimmers in this squad are normally aged from 12-17 and are focussing on achieving success at the Scottish National Age Group Championships and also qualifying for the British National Age & Youth Championships.  Six evening and 2 early morning workouts make up the weekly pool load for this squad with squad members now expected to make a full commitment to the sport.

AGE GROUP SQUAD
As part of her duties, Laurel Bailey also heads up our Age Group Squad, where promising swimmers of the future move to once they have completed the Development Squad programme (as outlined below).  Swimmers at this level are typically aged from 11-15 and are expected to make a serious commitment to training commensurate with success at the East District Age Group Championships and qualification for the Scottish National Age Group Championships.  The programme of 6 weekly pool sessions includes 4 evening and 2 early morning workouts.

D+ SQUAD
Our D+ Squad is primarily for young swimmers who are showing particularly good early aptitude for swimming, in combination with the right sort of attitude and high levels of commitment to the sport.  Swimmers tend to enter this group from either D2 or D3 when they become ready and are generally aged from 10-12 years old.  This group has access to 4 evenings and 1 early morning workout per week and a high attendance level is expected, with the morning session a compulsory part of the programme.

D4 SQUAD
This squad is an extension of the D3 programme for swimmers who are still progressing at this level but not yet ready to move to the Age Group section.  D4 swimmers combine some of their training with D3 sessions and some with D+ squad workouts.  They also receive additional time on their own at the end of some sessions.

Weekly Pool Sessions ~ 4

D3 SQUAD
The third phase of the Development programme sees swimmers make further progress by developing advanced competition skills and stroke techniques.  They also build on the foundation skills laid down in D2 for endurance and speed training.

Coach ~ Hamilton Smith
Weekly Pool Sessions ~ 4
Total Training Hours ~ 4.5

D2 SQUAD
After completing our entry squad, swimmers move into D2 (Development 2) where they have increased training opportunities with the addition of an optional early morning session each week.  Swimmers spend most of their time in this group further developing the stroke techniques and racing skills they will need to be successful in competition.  They also begin to lay the foundations of future aerobic and speed development.

D1 SQUAD
D1 (Development 1) is our entry level squad and is split into three sections.  Most of the D1 members progress here from the SwimFast level of the SwimEasy lessons programme.  Alternatively, swimmers can come into D1 from other swimming lessons programmes providing they have achieved the same standards as required at the end of SwimFast classes.  In most cases this will mean the ability of a swimmer to perform all four strokes efficiently over 25m, perform a competent racing dive, and float effectively in the water.  The D1 Squad is currently split into three sections named D1, DF1 and Forth Valley.  The D1 and DF1 groups are based in Edinburgh and split in terms of age.  D1 usually takes in entrants to the club who are aged 10-11, while DF1 takes those who arrive at the club's door aged 8-9.  D1 Forth Valley operates in separate pools in the Forth Valley area.  The D1 and DF1 Edinburgh based groups are overseen by Coach Gail Smith, with regular assistance from Kyle Goodfellow (D1) and Ross Johnston (DF1), two of our leading senior swimmers.  In Forth Valley, Jenni Holt leads the programme.  Both Gail and Jenni are heavily involved in the SwimEasy lessons programme and thus, although they are separate organisations, continuity of content is incorporated from lessons to the club, and familiar faces who already know the swimmers are on hand to welcome new members into the club set up.
