Top Club Trophy Highlights Successful Warm Weather Training Camp
22 Jun 2008

A squad of 17 of Warrender's leading swimmers has returned from a two week training camp in Mataro, Spain with a Top Club Trophy after a series of successful swims at a local meet on the camp's final day.  Competing in the 17th Trofeu Ciutat de Mataro (a regional Catalunya Grand Prix meet), the swimmers put in some great performances to land the prestigious title ahead of many of Spain's top swimming clubs.  Gold medal swims from Lewis Smith (1500 free), Sally Wood (400 IM), a silver from Lewis (400 IM) and a bronze from Helen McRoberts (800 free) were the top scoring swims that set up the team victory.  Additional very impressive swims from Craig Hamilton (1500 free), Craig McNally (400 IM), Robbie Purvis (100 fly) and Mark Steeples (400 IM) also contributed to the win.

The result was all the more impressive considering that it came at the back end of an arduous two week warm weather training camp where the swimmers were put through their paces in preparation for the forthcoming various National Championships.  Over the previous 13 days, the athletes undertook over 5 hours training per day in a combination of land and pool work in the hot Catalunya sun in northern Spain.  Robbie Purvis was named swimmer of the camp for his hard work and positive attitude throughout.
