Benson Lowers British Age Record
12 Apr 2008

Warrender's Craig Benson lowered his own Boys 13 yrs British Age Group Record for the 100m Breaststroke (long course) when winning the event during Day 3 of the Scottish National Age Group Championships in Glasgow today. The record had stood at 1:09.03 from his swim at the Home Nations Schools International Meet last month but in tonight's 13 years final he lowered it to 1:08.33. It was obviously also a Scottish Age Group Record, as was his split of 32.06. Benson continued his great run of form during these championships with a second gold medal of the night an hour later as he stormed home to victory in the 200m IM in a time of 2:18.36.

Craig McNally celebrated another successful day with victory in the Boys 15 yrs 100m Backstroke in a new lifetime best of 1:01.67. Ryan Archibald made it a double celebration for the club touching the pad in second place in 1:03.67 for the silver medal. Both boys were back in action 30 minutes later in the 200 IM with McNally excelling again taking the silver medal in a huge PB of 2:17.41. Archibald finished 5th.

The 14-17 yrs Girls 4 x 200 Freestyle team of Helen McRoberts, Yasmin Khera, Rosie Hood and Katelyn Stewart followed up last night's victory in the 4 x 100 Medley relay with a further visit to the top of the podium, with Katelyn holding off the challenge of Eloise Barber from Carnegie on the anchor leg.

Country members and brothers, Oliver and Charles Bitowt, both had very busy days with four events and a total of seven swims each. In the Boys 10-12 yrs age group, Oliver raced to gold in the 100m Breaststroke, took silver in the 100m Backstroke and 400m Freestyle and rounded off the day with a bronze medal in the 200 IM. Elder brother Charles swam a superbly paced race to capture the Boys 13 yrs 400m Freestyle title and then placed fourth in the finals of all three of the other events today.

Yasmin Khera continued her rise up the female sprint freestyle rankings with a silver medal in the Girls 14 yrs 100m Freestyle (1:00.20) while Sally Wood demonstrated her versatility by taking the bronze medal in the Girls 16-18 yrs race, agonisingly just missing breaking the minute with a time of 1:00.00.

Ewan Johnston swam brilliantly on all four strokes to take gold in the Boys 16-18 yrs 200 IM (2:08.35) while Callum Shaw was over the moon with a bronze medal and a new lifetime best of 1:00.77 in the equivalent 100m Backstroke race where Ewan also placed sixth.

In the afternoon Girls 1500m Freestyle events, Marnie Stewart was outside her best but still picked up the bronze medal in the 15 yrs category, whilst Ailsa Small swam a great race to finish fourth in her first ever long course attempt at the event.

Warrender have now established a sizeable lead over Portsmouth and Glasgow in the top club rankings. The meet concludes Sunday.
