Smith through to 400 Free final at Olympic Trials, big PBs from Woolley and KheraOlympic Trials - Day 1 Heats
Lewis Smith made it through to tomorrow's 'A' final of the Men's 400m Freestyle as the British Olympic Trials got underway in Sheffield tonight. Swimming in the first seeded heat against Olympic medalist David Davies, Lewis recorded 3:55.14. The time was just outside his lifetime best but was good enough to secure the vital second swim in the morning. In the first heat of the day, Ross Woolley produced a superb swim of 4:11.68 to knock five seconds off his previous best. However, Ewan Johnston was disappointed with his swim of 4:04.38, three seconds down on his personal best time set last month in America.
Billy Purnell looked controlled as he progressed to the 'B' Final of the Men's 100m Backstroke with a strong heat swim of 58.38. Ross Woolley was back in action in the same event but had to settle for 1:03.00, slightly down on his best and perhaps suffering some fatigue from his earlier exploits in the 400 Free.
Fast improving 14 year old Yasmin Khera showed no sign of nerves when reducing her lifetime best in the Women's 100m Freestyle by 1.4 seconds to 1:00.09. The magical 60 second barrier edges ever closer and is sure to fall soon.
