European Championships, Day 3 Round-UpWarrender's Lewis Smith completed his events at the European Short Course Championships in Hungary with a 2:00.44 swim in the Men's 200m Butterfly. The time was just outside his lifetime best of 1:59.66 and left Smith feeling a little deflated after his fantastic performances on the first two days of competition. Meanwhile, the fast swimming in Debrecen continued with two more world records making it six in total for the meet now. Croatia's Sara Jovanovic broke the Women's 50m Backstroke world record using great underwater kicking to hit the wall in an incredible 26.50. A few minutes later, Germany set a new world standard in the Women's 4x50 Medley Relay knocking over one second off the previous best time.
Despite not improving his personal best today, Smith was in jovial mood about the meet in general, "This has been a great meet for me," noted Smith, "setting my first ever Scottish Senior Record and making the final of the 400 I.M. was brilliant and sets me up perfectly for 2008. I've gained very useful racing experience here, which I intend to build on next week at the French Interclub Championships and then again at the Scottish Short Course National Championships in mid-January."
Warrender Head Coach Ian Wright has also been enjoying the racing in Debrecen, "Although swimmers and countries tend to come to this meet with varying objectives, the standard of racing is always extremely high and this year has been no exception. There have been six new world records already, plus lots of European and National records broken. It shows how the world is constantly moving on in swimming and those who want to keep up need to keep looking for new ways to get faster. I will be taking back the experience I've gained here and applying it, along with some new ideas, to the Warrender programme in the months ahead."
