Benson Strikes Bronze at British Nationals
24 Jul 2007

Fast improving Craig Benson got the ASA National Age Group Championships in Sheffield off to a great start for Warrender when winning the bronze medal in the Boys 13 years 100m Breaststroke.  His time of 1:12.19 was a lifetime best (as was his 50m split of 33.83) and the result matches that he got last year when also claiming bronze as a 12 year old.  Craig moved to Warrender a few months ago from Livingston Dolphins and has made excellent progress under coach Laurel Bailey's guidance.  Craig will be looking for further good performances when he lines up in the 200 Breaststroke and 200 IM later this week.

The good results continued when Zach Courtney placed 5th in the final of the Boys 13 years 100 Backstroke today.  Zach twice improved his personal best during the day with times of 1:06.54 and 1:06.48 in the heat and final respectively.  Zach and Craig then lined up with Craig McNally and Ryan Archibald in the Boys 11-14 years 4 x 100 Medley Relay.  Going into the race ranked 17th of 30 teams, a superb heat performance qualified the quartet as 5th fastest.  Craig McNally led off with a fantastic backstroke split of 1:04.65 (2 seconds inside his previous best), followed by good times from Craig Benson on breaststroke (1:12.08), Zach Courtney on butterfly, (1:06.39), and Ryan Archibald anchoring on freestyle (59.12).  In the final, the boys couldn't quite match their heat performance (splits, 1:05.18, 1:13.41, 1:06.03, 59.20) and finished in 6th place overall but it was still a great result significantly exceeding pre-race expectations.
