Swimmers Prepare for British Championships
21 Jul 2007

The largest ever number of swimmers Warrender has qualified for the meet are currently finalising their preparations for the ASA National Age, Youth & Open Championships which get under way in the famous Ponds Forge pool in Sheffield next week.  This 'festival of swimming' is the culmination of the 2006-07 season and sees the best swimmers from all over Britain competing against each other over 10 days of action.  This year Warrender has no less than 21 swimmers taking part (22 actually qualified with one missing due to family holidays).

Racing gets underway on Monday 23rd July with the 'Age Group' section of the meet lasting four days.  Warrender fields five swimmers in this part of the meet: Craig Benson, Craig McNally, Zach Courtney, Ryan Archibald and Yasmin Khera.  Craig (Benson) and Zach were both medal winners last year as 12 year olds and will be looking to repeat that again this year in the Boys 13 years section.  Craig goes in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke plus the 200 IM.  Zach also has the 200 IM, along with 100's of Backstroke and Butterfly.  In the Boys 14 year category Craig McNally will be aiming for a place in the final of the 200 Backstroke.  And those three boys will team up with Ryan Archibald for the Boys 11-14 years 4x100 Medley relay in which they will be looking to challenge for a place on the podium.  The club's lone female swimmer in this section is the rapidly improving Yasmin Khera who will be attending her first ever British Championships swimming the Girls 13 years 100m Freestyle.

On Friday 27th July action in the Youth and Open sections commences with 16 Warrender swimmers facing up to the challenges of what promises to be the strongest ever British Nationals.  The team will have to be on very top form in order to challenge for finals and medals but no swimmer will go to the meet unable to do this.  For the first time ever, the club has qualified all six Youth relays to the meet and it will be aound these events that the team should build a successful meet.  Contesting the Youth events for the girls are: Rosie Hood, Sally Wood, Katelyn Stewart, Helen McRoberts, Jennifer Dobson and Marnie Stewart; while on the boys side we field: Billy Purnell, Ewan Johnston, Andrew Haslett, Ben Hui, Ross Woolley, and Craig Purnell.  Four swimmers will be racing in the Open events: Lewis Smith, Fiona Booth, Kyle Goodfellow and Ross Johnston.
