Strong team ready for Scottish Age Group Championships10 Apr 2007
A strong Warrender squad is currently undertaking its final preparations for the Scottish National Age Group Championships which start in Glasgow on Thursday. A staggering 43 swimmers have achieved entry times for this year's competition, making the club one of the largest at the meet, and one of the biggest squads Warrender has ever sent to this event.
The four day competition incoporates five different age groups (10-12, 13, 14, 15, and 16-18) contesting the full range of competitive events apart from 50's. Relays are also included in the meet, which double up as the qualification opportunity for the British Championships later in the year. Warrender will field teams in all 12 relay events.
Established stars such as Lewis Smith and Fiona Booth are now too old for this competition so it is to younger competitors that we turn our attention for success this week. In the boys events, Billy Purnell, Andrew Haslett and Ewan Johnston should all enjoy medal winning swims in the 16-18 years section, while Ben Hui, Ross Woolley and Robbie Purvis will aim for podium places in the 15 year age group. In younger ages, watch out for Craig McNally, Zach Courtney and Sean Campsie to make a positive impression on the meet.
The girls races should see strong performances from Sally Wood, Rosie Hood, Katelyn Stewart and Helen McRoberts in the oldest age group, whilst Emily McQueen will be looking for medals in the breaststroke races in the 15 years category. In the younger age groups, new recruit Jennifer Dobson, established Scottish squad member Marnie Stewart will no doubt be in the mix, while the likes of Fiona Gibson, Mairi Drummond, Camille brash, Rachael McQueen and Yasmin Khera will all be looking to make a significant breakthrough at this level.
News of how the team gets on will follow later in the week.
