8 Jul 2011

Dan Wallace has won his first international medal, claiming the silver medal in the 200 Individual Medley on the 3rd night of finals at the European Junior Championships in Belgrade. Wallace pushed team mate Ieuan Lloyd all the way, with Lloyd showing his strength to pull away on the frontcrawl leg. Wallace touched in 2:02.41 to make it a top 2 finish for Britain.

Wallace was delighted with his silver medal, ''It's what I have been training for all year. After I finished 7th on this event last year, I was determined to be back and make it on to the podium this time around. I have made a lot of improvements over the last 12 months an although tonight wasn't a perfect swim, I am really pleased with the silver.'' Wallace will now have a day of rest before getting back in the pool on Sunday to swim the longer of the medly events - the 400 IM.

Craig Benson continued to show his strength on the 50m Breaststroke, proceeding to the finals in 8th place with a 28.80 which was slightly faster than his heat time. Swimming in lane 8 in the final, Craig came perilously close to snatching a medal from the centre lanes, finishing 4th in a new lifetime best and British Age Group Record time of 28.57. Benspn will be back in the pool for heats of the 100m Breaststroke tomorrow morning.
