Swimmers from Edinburgh’s Warrender Baths Club are celebrating this week after being crowned the Top Club at the East of Scotland District Age Group Championships for the 12th year in succession. The Meet, held across four weekends, concluded on the weekend at the FIFE Institute of Sport in Glenrothes.

It was a great team victory for the Club. With many of the senior swimmers absent for the later rounds of the meet due to training camps and the British Championships, it was down to the next group of potential stars to pull their weight. Making the most of their opportunity, the younger swimmers stepped up to lead the way for the Club, winning in emphatic style.

As always, there were too many great swims to mention them all, but special note must be made of Jennifer Dobson (East of Scotland Area Institute of Sport Athlete) and Connor Wilson who were awarded Top Girl and Boy respectively in the 16/over Age Group, and Megan Briggs who was awarded the Top Girl in the 12/13 Age Group. These three swimmers had a great final weekend, winning a host of medals and contributing to the relay success in each of their age bands. Senior swimmers, Camille Brash and Connor Mollison accepted the Solripe Trophy on the Club’s behalf; reward for the many years that they have spent contributing to the East District campaign!

Youngster Stuart Niblock had his first taste of East District success, taking a silver medal on the 100 Butterfly and contributing to the success of the 10/11 Boys relay teams. Combined with team mate Brodie Savage’s gold on the 100m Breaststroke and bronze on the 100m Butterfly, it was a strong performance from the boys in the youngest age groups.

Chris Kerr continued his good form, coming back from the British Championships 10 days ago, to take Gold in the 16/over 100m Breaststroke in a new 17 year old East District Record time of 1:02.52. It was also fantastic to see Performance Squad member Ryan Archibald back on the podium after a hard 12 months battling injury and illness. Archibald took gold in the 16/over 100m Butterfly, silver in the 100m Backstroke and bronze in the 100m Freestyle, showing his excellent skills for racing in a short course pool.

The 13/14 year old boys showed their strength, with the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams finishing in the Top 3 in both the Medley and Freestyle relays. Birthday boys Daniel Lim and Matthew Anderson contributed to the superb gold medals that the ‘A’ team won, whilst Murray Blair and Iain Rose showed how much they have improved in recent months by posting some excellent times in the ‘B’ team. The other swimmer celebrating her birthday in fine style yesterday was Katherine Fraser, who dropped 2.5 seconds off her 100m Butterfly time to just miss a place in the final of the 12/13 age group. Fraser went on to swim an outstanding leg in the 12 year old girl’s Freestyle relay, helping her team to a gold medal.

All in all, it was a fantastic team effort, and once again highlighted the strength and depth of the Club. 29 of the Club’s 32 Relay Teams finished in the Top 6, and in fact we were the only club able to field at least one team (and most often two) in every age group. There were many new faces in finals across the championships, and you can see a full list of medallist and finalists from across the whole Championships below. Congratulations to everyone involved across the four weekends!

Swimmers return to training this week to finalise their preparation for the upcoming Scottish National Age Group Championships (7-10 April).
