Scottish National Open Championships 2010 - McNally crowned double Scottish Champion!
9 Jul 2010

Craig McNally, from Edinburgh’s Warrender Baths Club, is celebrating being crowned the Scottish National Champion in the 100m and 200m Backstroke events at the 2010 British Gas Scottish National Championships held in Toll Cross, Glasgow from 22-27 June 2010.

McNally (Scottish Institute of Sport Athlete), cemented his place at the fore of Scottish Backstroke swimming after setting new lifetime best times across all three distances. In the 50m Backstroke he finished 4th overall on 27.02 (17 year old Scottish Age Group Record), and on the 100m and 200m Backstroke he finished 2nd overall but was the first Scot home, allowing him to be crowned Scottish National Champion. His 200m Backstroke time (2:03.22), left him only 1.74 seconds outside the Commonwealth Games nomination time and was also a 17 year old Scottish Age Group Record, and a Scottish Institute of Sport Gold Time.

Other Warrender athletes in action included Lewis Smith and Sean Fraser (Scottish Institute of Sport Athletes), both of whom cemented their place on the 2010 Scottish Commonwealth Games Team. Smith achieved the nomination time for the 400 Individual Medley, whilst Fraser will compete in the Multi Disability 100m Freestyle event.

Dan Wallace (East of Scotland Institute of Sport Athlete) had a successful week of racing, with his sights set on swimming lifetime bests at the European Junior Championships in Helsinki in July. Wallace made the senior ‘A’ final of the 200 IM, 400 IM and 50 Fly events, as well as posting new personal best times in the 200 and 400 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke events, to once again show his versatility across a range of distances and strokes.

Jennifer Dobson had a busy six days of racing, with solid times posted in all of her events. Dobson (East of Scotland Institute of Sport Athlete) progressed to the Senior ‘A’ Final on the 200 and 400 Freestyle, 200 and 400 I.M and 50 Backstroke events. Dobson also played an integral role in the successful 4 x 200 Freestyle Relay Team which took gold. Dobson got the team off to a great start, giving Camille Brash, Kirsty Elliott and Marnie Stewart everything to fight for, to narrowly finish first ahead of a fast finishing East Lothian Team.

Many swimmers contributed to the success of the Warrender Team at this meet, with many gaining places in ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals, some for the very first time at this level. With a very young team contributing to the overall point score, it was a great achievement to finish 3rd overall in the Top Club stakes. The coaching staff was very proud of the overall professionalism displayed by the team, as well as the strong level of team support and encouragement that prevailed throughout the six day meet.

For most of the team, this event was a stepping stone on the way to the last meets of the season, the ASA Age and Youth Championships, taking place in Sheffield from 27th July - 8th August. You can check the Warrender results on the British Swimming website, www.swimming.org. We have swimmers taking part in various open water swims throughout July and August with the Scottish Open Water Championships taking place on 24 July at Strathclyde Park. Coach Kyle Goodfellow is taking a team of 15 swimmers to Swansea from 2-8th August for the Welsh Summer Nationals, and you can follow their results on the SwimWales website www.welshasa.co.uk. In addition to this, we wish Dan Wallace the very best of luck as he takes his place in the Great Britain team competing at the European Junior Championships, taking place in Helsinki from 14-18 July 2010. You can keep up to date with Dan’s results on the website www.helsinki2010.fi/
