Warrender Crowned National Age Group Champions!16 Apr 2010
Swimmers from Edinburgh’s Warrender Baths Club are celebrating this week after being crowned the Top Scottish Club at the Scottish National Age Group Championships last weekend (8-11 April 2010) at Glasgow’s Toll Cross pool.
Competing against the country’s best swimmers, plus several high profile teams from England, Warrender won the overall team title by a convincing margin leaving the teams of Carnegie ASC and F.I.R.S.T to make up the top 3.
Leading the way for Warrender was Scottish Institute of Sport athlete Craig McNally, and Scottish Youth Squad members Dan Wallace and Craig Benson. McNally took double gold on the Backstroke events, as well as bronze on the 800m Freestyle and made the final of the 100 and 200 Freestyle plus the 200 I.M events.
Dan Wallace, moving into the senior 16-18 age group for the first time had a very hectic week, keen to show his versatility across a range of events. Wallace broke the 16 year old Scottish Age Group Record on the 400 I.M when he took silver in a time of 4:29.51. He went one step further on the 200 I.M, winning the event against a classy field of swimmers up to two years older than him. Wallace also took silver on the 200 Breaststroke, and bronze on the 400, 800 and 1500 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly events. Wallace was awarded the top 16 and under boy at the meet, based on his performances in the 400 I.M
Craig Benson had a friendly but competitive duel with South Aberdeen Swimmer James Yule across the course of the four day meet, with Benson coming out on top with three gold’s to his name. Benson took gold on the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and 200 I.M events, as well as silver on the 200 Butterfly and 400 I.M events.
Jennifer Dobson had a busy four days of racing, with solid times posted in all of her events. Dobson (member of the Scottish Youth Squad), finished third on the 100 Backstroke in a new lifetime best time, and also claimed bronze on the 400 Freestyle. Contesting a number of other finals, Dobson also played a key role in all three of her relay teams, as well as offering support and encouragement to all of her younger team mates throughout the weekend, helping them to achieve their best.
Although impossible to mention all of the medallists and finalists, it was clear to see the depth of talent present in the young Warrender team. Congratulations in particular to Daniel Lim, who won gold on the 14 years 200 Breaststroke, and Bronze on the 100 Breaststroke, whilst making his first ASA National Qualifying Times (NQT). Likewise, to Connor Mollison, Kirsty Elliott and Kate Forbes who also achieved their first NQT’s after many years of hard work and dedication to their sport. It was fantastic to see Nicole Wilson back in the water and swimming well, after a long period out due to a back injury. Brother, Connor Wilson, was in sensational form, swimming personal best times in almost every event he contested, qualifying himself for many of the senior finals whilst being at the younger age of the 16-18 year age group.
Many swimmers contributed to the success of the Warrender Team at this meet, with many gaining places in finals and winning medals for the first time ever. The coaching staff was very proud of the overall professionalism displayed by the team, as well as the strong level of team support and encouragement that prevailed throughout the four days meet.
The swimmers will now enjoy a few well earned day’s out of the pool, before resuming their training, with the Scottish Commonwealth Games Trials (22-27 June, Glasgow), the European Junior Championships (14-17 July, Helsinki), and the ASA Age and Youth National Championships (29 July – 3 August, Sheffield) the major meets to look forward to.
