Warrender Make it Eleven in a Row! 8 Mar 2010
Swimmers from Edinburgh’s Warrender Baths Club are celebrating this week after being crowned the Top Club at the East of Scotland District Championships for the 11th year in succession. The Meet, held across four weekends, concluded on the weekend at the FIFE Institute of Sport in Glenrothes.
It was a great team victory for the Club. With many of the senior swimmers absent now that they have moved on to train elsewhere, it was down to the next group of potential stars to pull their weight. Making the most of their opportunity, the younger swimmers stepped up to lead the way for the Club, winning in emphatic style. Final points were Warrender 1st on 109 to Carnegie 2nd on 99.
As always, there were too many great swims to mention them all, but special note must be made of Jennifer Dobson (East of Scotland Area Institute of Sport Athlete) and Dan Wallace (East of Scotland Area Institute of Sport Athlete) who were awarded Top Girl and Boy respectively in the 16/over Age Group. Both swimmers had a great weekend with Jennifer placing in all of the finals and finishing 2nd in the 100 Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly events. Dan had a tight tussle with Craig McNally on the Freestyle and Backstroke, finishing second on each, whilst taking gold in the 100 Butterfly; all in new lifetime best times; and bronze in the 100 Breaststroke (holding off Coach Kyle Goodfellow).
Youngster Jodie White had her first taste of East District success, taking a bronze medal on the 100 Breaststroke and contributing to the success of the 10/11 Girls Medley Relay team which won gold.
Daniel Lim continued to stamp his place as an upcoming talent and someone to watch in the future, with gold on the 100 Breaststroke and Freestyle events, silver in the 100 Butterfly and bronze in the 100 Backstroke. The top boy award for the 12/13 boys age group was very close and came down to the very last event, with Craig Bowman (Carnegie) just beating Daniel to the title (4 points the margin).
Another Junior National swimmer that showed huge improvement throughout the championships was Tiffany Bachelet. Tiffany’s original entry time for the 100 Breaststroke was 1:29, which she obliterated yesterday when she took silver in a fantastic lifetime best of 1:19.79. Tiffany also posted some great personal bests on the 100 Freestyle and Backstroke events.
All in all, it was a fantastic team effort, and once again highlighted the strength and depth of the Club. 24 of the Club’s 29 Relay Teams finished in the Top 6, and in fact we were the only club able to field at least one team (and often two) in every age group. There were many new faces in finals across the championships, and you can see a full list of medallist and finalists from across the whole Championships below. Congratulations to everyone involved across the four weekends!
Swimmers return to training this week with the seniors putting in place their final preparations for the British Championships (29 March – 3 April), and the top three squads finishing off a couple of weeks of hard training before the Scottish Age Group Championships (8-11 April).
