Warrender Crowned National Champions!Swimmers from Edinburgh’s Warrender Baths Club are celebrating this week after being crowned the Top Scottish Club at the Scottish Short Course National Championships last weekend (15-17 January 2010) at Glasgow’s Toll Cross pool.
Competing against the country’s best swimmers, plus several high profile teams from England, Warrender won the overall team title by a small margin leaving the teams of City of Glasgow and Stirling Swim to make up the Top 3.
Leading the way for Warrender was Great Britain Senior Team member Lewis Smith, Scottish Institute of Sport athlete Craig McNally and Scottish Youth Squad members Dan Wallace and Craig Benson. Smith, now swimming at the Stirling ITC, took gold in the 100, 200 and 400 metre Individual Medley events; silver in the 200 Backstroke and Butterfly; and bronze in the 400 Freestyle. Still in heavy training and with a heavy race schedule throughout the meet, Smith was satisfied with his results.
Dan Wallace had an outstanding meet, finishing second to Smith in the 100 and 200 I.M events and third in the 400 I.M. Wallace also contested the ‘A’ final of the 400 Freestyle, and ‘B’ finals of the 200 Breaststroke, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Butterfly and 100 Freestyle events, once again showing his versatility and talent across a wide range of events. All three of Wallace’s medley swims were 16 year old Scottish Age Group Records.
Craig McNally took home his first open Scottish National Title when he took gold ahead of team mate Lewis Smith in the 200 Backstroke. McNally finished 5th in the 50 and 100 Backstroke events and contested the ‘A’ finals of the 100, 200 and 400 I.M events and the ‘B’ final of the 400 Freestyle. McNally’s 200 Backstroke was a 17 year old Scottish Age Group Record.
Craig Benson was awarded the ‘Top Junior Male’ of the meet after taking home the Scottish Junior Title in the 50 and 100 Breaststroke; and the 100, 200 and 400 Individual Medley events. Benson broke the Scottish Junior Record on the 50 Breaststroke, finishing only .09 shy of the British Junior Record, and broke the 15 year old Scottish Age Group Record in the 100 Breaststroke.
Jennifer Dobson had a busy three days of racing, with solid time posted in all of her events. Dobson (member of the Scottish Youth Squad), contested the ‘A’ finals of the 200 and 400 Individual Medley, 200 and 400 Freestyle, 100 and 200 Backstroke and 200 Butterfly, whilst also playing a key role in all three relay events. Helen McRoberts (Scottish Silver Squad member) took silver behind Hannah Miley in the 400 and 800 Freestyle events and narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the 400 Individual Medley. McRoberts also took part in the ‘A’ final of the 200 Freestyle and ‘B’ finals of the 100 Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley events.
Competing for Warrender for the first time was Scottish Youth Squad member, Fiona Donnelly. 14 year old Donnelly took gold in the 50 and 100 Backstroke events, silver in the 200 Backstroke and 14/under titles in the 800 and 400 Freestyle and 400 Individual Medley. Donnelly also contested the 50, 100 and 200 Butterfly and 200 Individual Medley ‘A’ finals, whilst also contributing to the Warrender relays.
Many swimmers contributed to the success of the Warrender Team at this meet, with many gaining places in finals for the first time ever. Rachael McQueen, Murray Lawrence, Mark Steeples, Kirsty Elliott, Shona Lambert, Ryan Archibald, Camille Brash, Connor Wilson, Marnie Stewart all also contested finals, highlighting the depth and talent that the team has. Congratulations to every swimmer in the team for contributing to a very successful meet.
