DAY 2 - Scottish National Age Group Championships
10 Apr 2009
Dan Wallace and Craig Benson added to their gold medal collections on Day 2 of the Scottish Gas National Age Group Championships, each adding a third title to their haul. Wallace swam a superbly paced 800 Freestyle in the afternoon event which was heat declared. His time of 8:46.49 put him three seconds clear of his nearest rival. Wallace showed his versatility when he later claimed silver in the 15 years 200 Backstroke final, finishing with a time of 2:13.55. Craig Benson held on in a very tight finish to take Gold in the 14 years age group 100 Butterfly. Benson bettered the life time best he posted in the morning heats to finish in 1:01.10.

In other swims on Day 2, Craig Hamilton took the 16-18 years title in the 800 Freestyle in a time of 8:21.70 and team mate Ross Woolley was 6th in 8:50.91 . Connor Wilson finished 5th in the 15 years category, 8:59.93, Charles Bitowt was 4th in the 14 years category in 9:03.81 and David Colley was 6th in the 12 years age group (10:10.83).

Once again the Warrender boys were a strong force in the 200 Backstroke finals. As well as Wallace's silver in the 15 years final, Wilson finished 6th in the same final with a 2:20.15. In the 13 years final, Ollie Bitowt took silver in 2:18.16, whilst in the 16-18 years final four boys were in action. Craig McNally set a new 16 year old National Age Group record to finish in 2:07.22, taking silver. Callum Shaw claimed bronze in 2:11.96, Ross Woolley was 7th in 2:17.65 and Mark Steeples was 8th in 2:19.76.
In the 400m finals, Jennifer Dobson slashed her lifetime best by 5 seconds to finish 7th in the 15 years final (4:37.22). The 16-18 years final was a very exciting one with Warrender swimmers Sally Wood and Helen McRoberts taking 1st and 2nd. Wood led out from the start (4:26.67) , whilst McRoberts (4:26.73) finished fast but was unable to get past Wood in the end.

Ollie Bitowt was back in action in the 13 years 100 Butterfly final, taking a bronze to add to his medal collection, in a new life time best of 1:02.07. In the same final Calum Reid finished 8th in 1:11.78. The 15 years final saw three Warrender swimmers take to the pool, with Murray Lawrence finishing the best of the three. Lawrence finished in 5th place in 1:02.23, Jordan Dunn was 7th in 1:04.93 and Fraser Humphries was 8th in 1:05.19.

One of the most courageous swims of the meet so far came from Ailsa Small in the final of the 13 years 200 Breaststroke. Small, swimming in Lane 1, slashed a massive 9 seconds of her heat time to take silver behind Garioch's Emily Jones. Finishing in a time of 2:48.57, Small went out hard from the start, also setting 50m and 100m lifetime best times along the way. Rachael McQueen followed in the 15 years final, finishing in 6th place with a best time of 2:47.67, whilst Helen McRoberts was back in the pool in the 16-18 years final, also taking 6th in 2:53.69.

The last event of the evening was the Boys 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay. The 10-14 years category saw Warrender finish 6th, with Simran Wilks, Ollie Bitowt, Daniel Lim and David Colley (4:10.48), a team to look out for in the future. Warrender 'A' took silver in the 15-18 category with the combination of Callum Shaw, Ross Woolley, Dan Wallace and Craig Hamilton (3:37.53). The Warrender 'B' Team finished a very commendable 6th with Craig McNally, Ryan Archibald, Connor Wilson and Craig Benson (3:47.25) making up the team.
