DAY 1 - Scottish National Age Group Championships

Day 1 of the 2009 Scottish Gas National Age Group Championships got off to a great start for the Warrender team with some excellent heat and final swims. Most of the best results were reserved for the finals, but there were some solid heat swims too. Jennifer Davis swam a superb 200 Butterfly heat, slashing her previous best time to post a 2:22.53. David Mulligan also came in with a big personal best on his 200 Freestyle in the 12 years age group, finishing in a time of 2:23.20. Other good 200 Freestyle swims include Murray Lawrence's 2:05.24 and Ollie and Charlie Bitowt posting new lifetime bests of 2:02.25 and 2:02.74 respectively.

In the afternoon session the 400 Individual Medley was contested, with the event being 'heat declared'. In the 13 year old girls age group, Ailsa Small finished 5th with a time of 5:23.19, in the 14 years Nicola Bett improved her best time by some 15 seconds, finishing in 12th with a time of 5:25.85. Rachael McQueen made her first National Qualifying Time in the 15 years age group, finishing 9th in 5:13.44. whilst Jennifer Dobson came in on 5:10.11 to finish 6th. In the 16-18 years category, Rosie Hood took bronze after a brilliant comeback swim on this event. Her time of 5:03.81. was 5 seconds faster than her previous best. Sally Wood took the gold in a time of 4:55.30.

In the boys section, David Colley recovered from an out of sorts morning to finish 5th in the 12 years age group in a time of 5:36.94. Ollie Bitowt finished 3nd in the 13 years category, posting a time of 5:02.94, whilst Craig Benson took gold in the 14 years category (4:49.23) and Dan Wallace repeated this feat in the 15 years category, posting an outstanding time of 4:39.22. Ross Woolley took silver in the 16-18 years age group (4:35.38) to complete a successful afternoon for the Warrender team.

As always, there were lots of Warrender swimmers in action during the finals session and there were some tremendous swims across the categories.

In the Girls 200 Butterfly, Ailsa Small finished 4th in the 13 years age group, slashing 5 seconds off her previous best, to finish in 2:34.36. Nicola Bett took silver, but was awarded the Scottish National Age Group Champion in the 14 years category, with her time of 2:26.74 a National Qualifying Time and a 4 second lifetime best. In the 15 years category, Jennifer Dobson finished 4th in 2:25.81 and Camille Brash was 7th in 2:28.29. Following on from her great heat swim, Jennifer Davis claimed silver in the 16-18 age group, with a 2:21.31. Sally Wood took the bronze (2:25.20) and Helen McRoberts finished 5th (2:27.29).

The Boys 200 Freestyle saw Ollie Bitowt finish 2nd in the 13 years category (2:03.88), his brother Charlie did likewise in the 14 years category (2:01.11), Murray Lawrence (5th, 2:03.02), Connor Wilson (6th, 2:06.41) and Jordan Dunn (8th, 2:10.35) contested the 15 years category, and Craig Hamilton finished 2nd in the 16-18 years final, posting a new lifetime best of 1:53.18.

Helen McRoberts was back in the pool for the final of the 16-18 years 100 Freestyle, breaking the elusive 1:00 barrier for the first time. Her 59.99 effort put her in 5th place, whilst team mate Jennifer Davis finished in 8th (1:03.21). Yasmin Khera was 5th in the 15 years final in a time of 1:00.32.

The final individual event of the night, the 100 Backstroke, saw 7 Warrender swimmers in the pool, with Ollie Bitowt (13 years, 1:04.90) and Craig Benson (14 years,1:03.97) taking gold in new lifetime bests. Dan Wallace finished 2nd in the 15 years age group, his time of 1:02.92 two seconds faster than his previous best. Connor Wilson bettered his heat time to finish 7th in 1:05.25 in the same final. Craig McNally took silver in the 16-18 years category (59.84), with team mates Callum Shaw (1:00.42) and Ross Woolley (1:03.63) finishing 3rd and 8th respectively.

The final event of the night was the Girls 4 x 200 Freestyle Relay. In the 10-13 years age group, Kate Forbes, Emily Clough, Megan Briggs and Holli Buckley teamed up to finish 6th, whilst the 14-17 years age group took silver. Yasmin Khera, Marnie Stewart, Jennifer Dobson and Camille Brash put in a good team effort, to finish just behind the team from Carnegie.
