Benson and Wilson win medals at ASA Age Groups
27 Jul 2008

Craig Benson and Connor Wilson got the ASA National Age Group Championships off to a superb start for Warrender with places on the podium on the first day of action.

In the very first event of the meet, Connor swam a well paced race in the Boys 14 years 1500m Freestyle to claim the bronze medal in 17:06, his first ever medal at this level.  Then later in the day, Benson headed up a Scottish 1-2-3 in the Boys 14 years 100m Breaststroke, winning the gold medal and his first British national title in 1:06.16.  The time was a two second drop on his previous best and established a new British Age Group record for the event, incredibly knocking over one second off the previous time.  South Aberdeen swimmers James Yule and Sam George joined Craig on the medal dais to complete the Scottish rout.

On day 2, Craig and Connor teamed up with Fraser Humphries and Ross McWhirter for the 4x100 Medley Relay.  Excellent swims from all four boys gave the team 12th place overall.  In earlier heat action, Connor set a lifetime best in the 200 Freestyle of 2:05.32.

The third day's racing witnessed further good swimming from the Warrender boys.  Craig made it through to the final of the 200 IM with an excellent PB in the heats of 2:15.80.  In the evening final he ended up 4th overall in 2:16.22.  Meanwhile, Connor continued to develop his reputation for distance swimming with a 6th place finish in the 800 Freestyle, his time of 8:50.52, representing a 10 second improvement on his previous best.

The fourth and final day of the meet saw Craig add to his medal tally making it double gold by winning the 200m Breaststroke in a huge personal best time of 2:26.41.  In a repeat of the 100m race, South Aberdeen's James Yule followed Craig home for the silver medal.

The results from these two swimmers and the relay are very promising for the future and we wish these boys well as they step up to the Youth Championships next season.
