Eight in a Row for Warrender Swimmers! 5 Mar 2007
Swimmers from Edinburgh’s Warrender Baths Club are celebrating this week after winning the Top Club trophy at the East District Championships which concluded last weekend (3-4 March 2007) in Glenrothes. Incredibly, it is the 8th year in a row the club has won the title and means they are still the only club to win the acclaimed Solripe Trophy for the whole of the 21st century!
The competition brings together the best swimmers in the East District region of Scottish Swimming and as such includes clubs from the Borders, the Lothians, and Fife. Winning one point per medal in the chase for the overall title, the contest was fairly even in the first half of the Championship with Warrender just edging the lead from city rivals Dunedin. However, in the second half of the meet Warrender pulled away to win by 35 points in the end.
Great results were produced by swimmers throughout all the different age groups and are literally too many to mention to do justice to everyone who contributed to the success. However, particular recognition goes to Ailsa Small (Girls 11 years), Sally Wood (Girls 16/over), and Lewis Smith (Boys 16/over) who were all crowned the top girl / boy in their respective categories.
Warrender Head Coach Ian Wright commented on the success, “We knew it would be a tough contest this year as other teams in the area had improved and some of our leading swimmers were away on international duty for Scotland for part of the meet. In the end it was a superb team effort and showed we have good strength in depth whereby some of our less well known swimmers stepped up their performances to achieve at this level. It was particularly good to see a number of younger swimmers breaking through the ranks and my praise and thanks goes out to my fellow coaching team for the great work they have done in helping to produce this result.”
The Warrender squad returned to heavy training this week in preparation for the forthcoming British Championships at the end of March and the Scottish Age Group Championships in mid-April.
