Ian Wright - Chief coachIan Wright

Ian Wright, is now in his ninth year as Warrender Chief Coach. He has guided Warrender to Scottish Mens Team Champions (Robertson Trophy ~ 1997, 1998); Womens Team Runners-Up (1997), East District Age Group Champions (Solripe trophy ~ 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) Lothian Club Champions (1999, 2001, 2003), third top club Scottish National Championships (1996, 2002) and 22nd ranked club in Britain (2002).

Under Ian's charge, 3 Warrender swimmers have qualified for the Great Britain Junior squad and over 20 have represented the Scottish East District team. He rates his best achievements as coaching Lewis Smith, Emma Harrison and Graham Scobie to medals at the British Age Group Championships.

ASA Coach Ian, started his swimming career with Skipton Dolphins (North Yorkshire, England) at age 10, moving on to Bingley S.C. (West Yorkshire) at 14. At 15, he was selected for the City of Bradford Swimming Scheme under the coaching of Ian Armiger. A breaststroke specialist, he qualified for his first ASA National Age Group Championship in 1989 and Senior Nationals a year later.

In 1991, to coincide with university commitments, Ian moved to York City Baths Club where he trained for three years with coach Paddy Garratt. Ian returned to Bradford in 1994 before joining Warrender as a swimmer in 1995. He is a three time British University Champion, a three time ASA North East District Champion and a two time Olympic Trialist on breaststroke events. In 1995 he was team captain to the England North East team in Portugal. A previous Scottish National Champion and a former member of the Scottish East District Squad, Ian maintained a top ten ranking on breaststroke in Great Britain from 1993-96.

Ian was the head coach of the Scottish East District Squad from 1999-2002 and in 2003, was appointed as head coach to the Great Britain Girls Age Group team, having successfully been the assistant coach in 2002. He graduated from the University of Leeds in 1994 with a first class BA (Hons.) in Physical Education with Geography and in 1999 graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an M.Sc. in Coaching Studies. Although swimming is his main interest, Ian is keen on all sports, in particular, cricket and golf.

Junior National Squad

Lead Coach : Laurel Bailey

Formerly known as 'Gold' Squad, this group caters for the rapidly improving, talented and seriously committed age group swimmers who are already experiencing success at the District and/or National level but who are not yet ready (in terms of training capacity, physical maturity or psychological maturity) for the advanced training of National Squad. Seven weekly pool (plus one land) sessions are available each week (12-13 hours in total) and the squad is headed up by Coach Laurel Bailey.

Age Group Squad

This is a new group which replaces the current Silver and Bronze Squad programmes. It will commence in January 2005with five dedicated pool sessions although it is our intention to increase this to six later. All members of the squad are required to attend the one early morning session each week. Australian Coach Laurel Bailey will be responsible for the group when she returns to Edinburgh in February. Until that time, Coaches Gail Smith and Dawn Smith will lead the programme and subsequently, regularly assist with the programme from February onwards.

Club Squad

Jenni Holt - Club Squad
Jenni became involved in swimming through her youngest daughter Helen (a current member of Club Squad) taking up the sport a few years ago. Soon after a move to Warrender in 2000, Jenni became good friends with former Silver squad coach, Gail Smith. Gail encouraged Jenni to get involved and soon she was helping with the administrative side of the sport and eventually on poolside too. In time Jenni was ready to take on a squad of her own and now thoroughly enjoys working with the children in our Development Squads. Jenni also teaches swimming, and holds the ASA Assistant Teacher qualification. She has successfully overcome her own fear of water and believes this now gives her a far greater understanding of how people feel about being in water. One of Jenni's best talents is getting others to 'volunteer' to assist with small jobs within the club and looks forward to recruiting more 'volunteers' soon.
